What Is a Soffit and Fascia? (And Why They Matter)

February 20, 2026 · by Belgres

Short answer: The fascia is the vertical board running along the edge of your roof — it’s what your gutters attach to. The soffit is the horizontal underside that closes off the eaves (the part you see when you look up under the roof overhang). Together they finish the roofline, keep out moisture and pests, and let your attic breathe.

What each one does

  • Fascia — the band along the roof edge. It supports the bottom row of shingles, anchors the gutters, and gives the roofline a clean, finished line.
  • Soffit — the underside of the overhang. Vented soffit allows air intake into the attic, which is essential for proper roof ventilation (and helps prevent ice dams and premature shingle wear).

Why soffit and fascia rot

In New England, these boards take the first hit from weather:

  • Overflowing or clogged gutters spilling water onto the fascia
  • Ice dams forcing water back under the roof edge
  • Peeling paint that lets moisture into bare wood
  • Freeze-thaw cycles that accelerate rot once water gets in

Left alone, the rot spreads to the roof deck and lets in birds, squirrels and insects.

Repair, replace, or upgrade

If the damage is caught early, sections can be repaired. If boards are widely rotted, replacement is the better fix — often with low-maintenance aluminum or PVC that won’t need repainting. It’s usually done as part of a roofing, gutter or siding project, when the roofline is already exposed. Learn more about our soffit & fascia work.
